WordPress SEO, set up properly

WordPress can be brilliant for SEO. It can also quietly sabotage it, through bloated themes, overlapping plugins, thin archive pages, and the one unticked box that hides the whole site from Google. I make sure yours is set up the right way.

I check

  • Indexing & archive settings
  • SEO plugin configuration
  • Theme & page builder weight
  • Plugin overlap & conflicts
  • Images & media
  • Permalinks & redirects

Common problems

What goes wrong on WordPress sites

These turn up on almost every WordPress site I audit.

Indexing settings

“Discourage search engines from indexing this site” is often left switched on after a build. Tag, author, date and attachment archives can also create hundreds of thin pages that dilute the site.

SEO plugin configuration

Yoast, Rank Math and similar plugins are only as good as their settings. Titles, canonicals, sitemaps, schema and breadcrumbs all need configuring for your site, and running two SEO plugins at once causes conflicts.

Themes and page builders

Heavy themes and page builders can load a lot of CSS and JavaScript on every page. That hurts Core Web Vitals and can bury your content in nested markup.

Plugin overlap

Over time, sites collect plugins that do each other’s jobs: two caching tools, three sliders, an old redirect plugin nobody remembers installing. Each one adds weight and risk.

Images and media

Oversized uploads, missing alt text, no modern formats, and lazy-loading on the main hero image, which slows down the most important part of the page.

Permalinks and redirects

Changing permalink structure or page slugs without redirects breaks links and loses rankings. I check the structure, redirect chains and broken internal links.

FAQs

WordPress SEO questions

Related: Technical SEO audit checklist · Why did my rankings drop?

Which SEO plugin should I use?

Yoast SEO and Rank Math are both capable. How it’s configured matters far more than which one you pick. If you’ve already got one set up, switching rarely helps on its own.

Is a page builder bad for SEO?

Not inherently. Plenty of page-builder sites rank well. The risks are page weight and messy markup, and both can usually be managed.

Do you build WordPress websites?

My focus is SEO, not web design. I work alongside your developer, or advise on SEO requirements during a rebuild, so the new site launches without losing visibility.
