Local SEO for Auckland: get into the map pack

When someone nearby searches for what you do, Google shows a map and three businesses before anything else. Local SEO is the work of earning one of those three spots, and turning it into phone calls.

How local rankings work

What Google weighs up for local results

Google says local results come down to three things. Each one points to specific work.

You can’t move your customers, so distance is mostly fixed. Relevance and prominence are where SEO makes the difference, and they’re usually the most neglected.

FactorWhat it meansWhat we work on
RelevanceHow well your profile and site match the searchCategories, services, page content, profile details
DistanceHow far you are from the searcher, or the area they namedCorrect address or service-area setup, location signals on your site
ProminenceHow well known and trusted you areReviews, links, citations, mentions and overall authority

What’s included

Local SEO and Google Maps SEO services

Google Business Profile

Primary and secondary categories, services, description, hours, photos and products, all set up to match how people search.

Service-area setup

For tradies and mobile businesses that visit customers, so you show across the areas you cover without listing a home address.

Reviews

A simple way to ask every customer for a review. Google doesn’t allow you to ask only the happy ones. I’ll also help you reply to reviews, good and bad.

Local citations

The same business name, contact details and website across reputable New Zealand directories and industry listings.

Location-relevant pages

Service pages that make it obvious where you work, with real local detail rather than copy-and-paste suburb pages.

Tracking

Calls, direction requests and website visits from your profile, so you can see what local search is actually worth to you.

Suburb pages

Do you need a page for every Auckland suburb?

Usually not. Pages that swap one suburb name for another and keep the same text add almost nothing. Google’s spam policies specifically call out “doorway pages” built this way.

A location page earns its place when it has something genuinely different to say: jobs you’ve done there, how you cover that area, or local rules and conditions.

What works better for most Auckland businesses

  1. One strong page per core service. Say clearly that you serve Auckland, and name your main areas.
  2. A properly configured Google Business Profile with an accurate service area.
  3. A few genuinely distinct area pages, only where you have real local substance, such as the North Shore, West Auckland or South Auckland.

Common problems

Why good businesses miss the map pack

  • The profile isn’t verified, or there are duplicates competing for the same business.
  • The primary category is wrong. It’s one of the strongest relevance signals, and it’s often set too broad.
  • Business details don’t match across directories: old addresses, dead phone numbers.
  • There are fewer, older reviews than the competitors in the same area.
  • The website doesn’t back the profile up. The homepage Google links to never says what you do or where.
  • The profile breaks the guidelines, for example with keywords stuffed into the business name. That can get a profile suspended.
What’s the difference between local SEO and Google Maps SEO?

They overlap heavily. “Google Maps SEO” usually means ranking your Google Business Profile in the map pack and in Google Maps. Local SEO also covers the normal organic results for local searches, which rely more on your website.

Can I rank across Auckland without a public address?

Yes, with a service-area profile. You’ll still show up most often near your verified location, but strong relevance and prominence widen your reach.

Can I put “Auckland” in my Google Business Profile name?

Only if it’s part of your real business name, as it appears on your signage and branding. Adding keywords to the name breaks Google’s guidelines and can get the profile suspended.

How quickly does local SEO work?

Fixing categories, verification problems and profile details can have an effect fairly quickly. Reviews and authority take longer to build. I’ll give you a realistic timeframe after looking at your profile and your competitors.

From a client

“The focus wasn’t just rankings — it was getting the right customers.”

Kevin took the time to understand our business, our customers and the areas we wanted to target. Our website became much more focused, and we started receiving enquiries from people specifically looking for the services we provide.
